Samsung pins its hopes on Galaxy Alpha's metal frame

Samsung has launched its new Galaxy Alpha with a metal frame, in a bid to boost sales after the plastic design of its smartphones has been blamed for the company’s recent struggles.
The Wednesday launch of the latest Galaxy smartphone comes after a difficult second quarter for Samsung. While overall smartphones sales grew by almost 27 percent, Samsung’s shipments dropped. In May, the company also appointed a new head of its design team.

Samsung has pitched the Galaxy Alpha with its metal frame as a new start, and the design as something “entirely new” compared to the design of its existing products, which have been justifiably criticized for looking cheap irrespective of what they cost.
However, in reality the shape of the home button still makes it look very much like a Samsung smartphone, and the plastic back has inherited the dimpled design of the Galaxy S5. For some, the changes Samsung has made aren’t nearly big enough.
“Overall it’s a good phone but I was disappointed with the design, even with the metal frame it feels too plastic,” said Francisco Jeronimo, research director for European mobile devices at IDC.
Samsung has also decided to make the Galaxy Alpha thin and light: it weighs just 115 grams and is 6.7 millimeters thick.

Under the hood, the smartphone is based on Android 4.4.4 and powered by an Exynos processor with four ARM Cortex-A15 cores running at 1.8GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores running at 1.3GHz. The screen measures 4.7 inches and has a 1280 by 720 pixel resolution.
The smartphone also has a 12-megapixel camera on the back and a 2.1-megapixel front camera. It has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of integrated storage, but no microSD card slot. The LTE connection supports download speeds up to 300Mbps, as long as there is a network that can handle it as well.
The smaller screen and lower screen resolution is slightly surprising since the rest of the phone has high-end specifications. Despite that, Samsung will likely charge a premium for the device. U.K. retailer Clove has put up the phone for preorder at £500 (US$850) including tax, which gives a good indication of what it will cost. (Samsung has yet to announce the official price for the smartphone.)
That is too much, according to Jeronimo. Samsung needs to choose more premium materials if it wants to charge a premium price, he said.
Samsung said the Galaxy Alpha will start shipping in the beginning of September, but details on where the phone will go on sale first weren’t immediately available.

Samsung Galaxy S5 4G variant outed priced at Rs 53500 in India

The Samsung Galaxy S5 4G has been launched in India for Rs 53500 almost three months after its plain old 3G version touched down amidst so much hype, you’d have thought it was an iPhone that was being released. But you won’t get the 4G variant everywhere of course, because of what use would it be to you if 4G connectivity is not available in your city?
For all practical purposes, Samsung will only sell theGalaxy S5 4G in areas which are covered by the high speed network. Count Bharti Airtel, Aircel and Reliance Jio amongst the telecom companies which provide 4G in some of their circles. Getting back to the smartphone in question, you’re probably wondering if you’ve missed out on something just because you bought its 3G cousin.
Samsung Galaxy S5 4G LTE
Rest assured that the only difference between the Samsung Galaxy S5 4G and 3G models has to do with one internal component. The latter gets its steam from a octa core Exynos 5 processor consisting of two quad core units. The former replaces this with a quad core Snapdragon 801 chip clocking a speed of 2.5GHz, and accompanied by Adreno 330 graphics muscle. On top of that, you surely remember the report which claimed that the octa core handset is a little slower than its quad core sibling.
Samsung Galaxy S5 4G full specifications list:
- 2.5GHz quad core Snapdragon processor
- 5.1-inch S-AMOLED full HD touchscreen
- Android KitKat v4.4.2 OS
- 2GB RAM, 16GB or 32GB onboard memory
- Expandable storage of 128GB
- 16MP main camera, 2MP webcam
- 2800mAh battery
The Samsung Galaxy S5 4G handset, just like its 3G counterpart, will be sold with an upgrade deal offering a discount of up to Rs 10000 on its price tag. Additionally, the company has joined hands with Airtel to sign up customers for 4G plans, with the promo mentioning 5GB data per month for two months.

Price slash for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Note 3 Neo in India

We’ve been anticipating new price cuts for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Note 3 Neo in India for some time now and they’re finally here. Retail tags of both devices have been officially trimmed by the company on its online store, while Flipkart has also reduced its rates to offer more competitive prices.
Let’s start off with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which was originally launched at Rs 49900 a year back and the price was later brought down to around Rs 43000. On the eStore, the newly listed price is Rs 40698 which is a decent drop, while Flipkart has taken things even lower by offering the phablet at Rs 38112.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo
The Note 3 Neo tablet was launched earlier this year for Rs 40990 which was greatly reduced to Rs 33990 a few months back. The new amount for the phablet is Rs 29570 throughSamsung’s online store. And if you head over to the aforementioned ecommerce website, you’ll be able to pick up the device for around Rs 27249.The two Samsung Galaxy phablets aren’t the only ones from the Korean giant to get price cuts. The company’s flagship Galaxy S5 which was launched at over Rs 51000 a few months back is now selling for as low as Rs 34752. The handset has seen a huge drop in its price through online retailers, while Samsung continues to offer it at full retail.

Xiaomi Mi3 handset will go up for sale again tomorrow on Flipkart

The Xiaomi Mi3 which has enjoyed unexpected demand in India, will go on sale again tomorrow through Flipkart, with 20000 units reported to be up for grabs. If you’re interested in buying it, you’d better register yourself for the same, since it’s not possible to grab the handset without doing that.
And even if you do register for the Xiaomi Mi3 sale, chances of actually getting to purchase it are pretty slim. If you haven’t heard, it is currently the most in-demand smartphone in the country. Units of it are vanishing off Flipkart’s shelves within seconds of them being made available.
The Xiaomi phone first went on sale on July 22 and managed to run out of stock in about 40 minutes. A week later, when more units were put up for sale, they were sold out within 5 seconds, whereas in the third week, it took just 2 seconds for the device to go out of stock.
Here’s a quick glance at the Xiaomi Mi3 handset features:
- Display: 5-inch IPS LCD, 1080p full HD
- Platform: Android 4.4 KitKat with MIUI V5
- Processor: 2.3GHz quad core Snapdragon 800
- Memory: 16GB internal memory, 2GB RAM
- Camera: 13MP main, 2MP front
- Connectivity: HSPA+, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS
- Battery: 3050mAh

Flipkart will make it available for purchase at 2pm sharp tomorrow at its much-appreciated price of Rs 13999. Registrations for this sale will only be accepted until midnight tonight.
The Xiaomi Mi3 has been setting records ever since it first arrived in India, and with tomorrow’s sale too, the Chinese company would definitely want a repeat of the same.

Samsung says it’s still on top in India in reaction to ‘Micromax is No. 1′ claims

Just a week back, a research firm announced that Samsung India had lost its spot as the leading mobile phone maker in Q2 2014 to Micromax. Well, the company hasn’t taken the information lying down and has responded stating the claims to be untrue and that it still holds the top position in themobile market.
Samsung’s President and Chief Executive for South-West Asia, BD Park, has disclosed this information toThe Economic Times and has also stated that the company still holds a market share of almost 50%. And in the smartphone category, it apparently has a market share that’s twice the amount of the next competitor’s, which is obviously Micromax.
This information shared by BD Park was based on the company’s internal research and data form an undisclosed firm. He also went on to suggest the possibility of there being ‘some business motive behind release of such kind of data.’ The report which was published by Counterpoint Technology last week disclosed that Micromax managed to earn the top spot in India for Q2.
However, CMR (CyberMedia Research) disclosed that the South Korean conglomerate was still in the lead, but the gap between it and the second place holder was slowly closing. While this data is highly contradictory, both research companies are sticking to their findings. Then there’s the India-based GfK which disclosed that Samsung possessed a smartphone market share of 42.5% with the overall total being 40.5%.
Even if Samsung continues to reign supreme in the Indian smartphone market, Micromax and other OEMs are still trying their best to overtake the giant. And who knows, we might even see that happen in the near future with the Korean company slowly losing its pace.

Samsung Reveals Galaxy S5 Mini

 Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini

The rumors were true. Samsung today revealed a mini version of its Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone.
The Galaxy S5 mini sports a 4.5-inch, 720-by-1,280 Super AMOLED display, down from the 5.1-inch, 1,920-by-1,080 display on the larger S5. It runs a 1.4GHz quad-core processor (the S5 has a 2.5GHz chip) and Android 4.4 KitKat. It has 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, expandable to 64GB via microSD.
There's an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash on the mini, as well as a 2.1-megapixel front-facing shooter, and the usual Samsung photo software.
The device is dust- and water-resistant, and includes features like ultra power saving mode, S Health, and a private/kids mode. Like the S5, meanwhile, the mini also includes the fingerprint and heart rate sensors.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini Electric BlueU.S. buyers will have to wait to get their hands on the mini. It will launch in Russia in July before rolling out globally. The device will come in four color options: Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue, or Copper Gold.
A mini version of the Galaxy S5 isn't entirely unexpected. Samsung released a Galaxy S4 Mini last year, which had a 4.3-inch display.
More recently, Samsung released a rugged version of the Galaxy S5. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is available on AT&T, while it will be known as the S5 Sport on Sprint.
Yesterday, Samsung also announced four new budget Galaxy devices: the Galaxy Core II, Galaxy Star 2, Galaxy Ace 4, and Galaxy Young 2.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo

Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo said to be launching this week for around Rs 19,000

The Galaxy Grand Neo, the latest in Samsung’s Grand series, is likely to reach Indian shores at a price of Rs 19,000, according to a tweet by Mumbai-based retailer Mahesh Telecom. With an almost similar specs sheet to the Galaxy Grand 2, is it effectively a toned-down version that’s not really required at that price point? At this point, that certainly seems to be the case.

The tweet also reveals a ‘Best Buy’ price of 18,190, and the device is expected to be available this week. Like its predecessor, the Neo is expected to come fitted with a 5-inch TFT display, and a disappointing 480 x 800 pixels of resolution.  Under the hood, the device will be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core A7 processor with 1GB of RAM, similar to the one found in the Grand 2.
The Neo will also reportedly come equipped with a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a VGA front-facing camera. It has 8GB of internal memory, which is further expandable via a microSD card slot. Other connectivity options include HSPA+ (21Mbps down, 5.76Mbps up), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct,  Bluetooth 4.0, micro USB, GPS and GLONASS. There is no word on a 4G variant of the device yet.

The device is likely to come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. All of this will be fuelled by a 2100mAh battery.

So what’s so special about the Grand Neo? As far as we can tell from the leaked images and specs, nothing really. It has nothing that really differentiates it from the Grand 2, so we’re not sure why Samsung built the Neo Grand instead of perhaps just lowering the price of the Grand 2. The Grand 2 is currently selling around 22,500 which isn’t really that much higher than the expected cost of the Neo.

Samsung reportedly ready to launch two Galaxy S II Plus variants in Jan 2013

Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-Plus-I9105.jpg

2012 witnessed the launch of plenty of interesting Near Field Communication (NFC) smartphones and looks like 2013 is going to be no different in this regards. About fortnight ago we had reported that Samsung is working on Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos and Galaxy S II Plus.

According to Unwired, Samsung is expected to launch two variants of Samsung Galaxy S II Plus - GT-i9105, and GT-i9105P. The only difference between these two Samsung devices will be that GT-i9105P will support NFC while GT-i9105 will not.
Samsung has launched Samsung Galaxy S Plus in August 2011 as an upgrade to Samsung Galaxy S. However, this time around Samsung Galaxy S Plus II does not seem to be much of an upgrade. Reason being Samsung Galaxy S Plus II is speculated to have the same 4.3-inch screen with 480X800 pixel resolution like Samsung Galaxy S. Moreover, instead of 1.2GHz processor, Samsung Galaxy S Plus II is expected to have just a 1GHz processor.
On the positive side, Samsung Galaxy S Plus II will most likely be running on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)
It is being speculated that Samsung Galaxy S II Plus will be launched in January 2013 and Sam Mobile claims that it will be available in two colour options - Chic White and Dark Blue. However, there is no information available in regards to what could be the price of this smartphone
There are also speculations that Samsung will be launching an upgraded version of Samsung Galaxy Pocket, which will be dubbed Samsung Galaxy Pocket Plus S5301.

Samsung plans to ship half a billion handsets in 2013

The Korean phone company aims to ship 510 million handsets next year

Samsung Galaxy S3

According to The Korea Times, the phone manufacturer expects itself to ship over half a billion handsets -- 510 million to be exact -- next year.
In 2012 alone, Samsung shipped an estimated 420 million devices. If we go by next year's projections, it's aiming for a 20 percent jump in devices shipped.
Of the 510 million devices forecast, 390 million units are expected to be smartphones, while the remaining 120 million will be feature phones.
Also in Samsung's plans are more Microsoft Windows 8 handsets, and an executive at Samsung's telecommunications department noted the high user demand for LTE devices.
Despite its ongoing patent battle with Apple, which topped CNET's list of 2012's biggest tech stories, Samsung has managed to be a huge success both in the U.S. and overseas, thanks to its successful Galaxy line of phones, tablets, and even 'phablets.' Do you guys think Samsung has what it takes to fulfill its big projections for next year?

Apple Samsung lawsuit: six more products under scrutiny

Apple has added six more Samsung products, including the Galaxy Note II, to its patent lawsuit against the company.

Documents filed to the San Jose federal court in California on November 23 list six Samsung products running the "Jelly Bean" and "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating systems, which Apple claims infringe its patents.
The six phones and tablets affected are the Galaxy S III, running the new Jelly Bean system, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 Wifi tablet, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Galaxy Rugby Pro and Galaxy S III mini.
Apple stated it had “acted quickly and diligently" in order to "determine that these newly released products do infringe many of the same claims already asserted by Apple."
In August, Samsung lost a US patent case to Apple and was ordered to pay its rival $1.05bn (£0.66bn) in damages for copying features of the iPad and iPhone in its Galaxy range of devices. Samsung, which is the world's top mobile phone maker, is appealing the ruling.
A similar case in the UK found in Samsung's favour and ordered Apple to publish an apology making clear that the South Korean firm had not copied its iPad when designing its own devices.
